Believer

Posted in Uncategorized on May 5, 2013 by riseabovefitnessoc

Tonight I went to go see my dear friend Chris Alas perform at a small bar in Costa Mesa CA. I’ve known Chris since he was in High School and he has worked for my band for the last 6 years. Chris plays in a one man band called Lobo Solo. Live he plays guitar and screams into a microphone. He plays along with music that he recorded himself that is being pumped through the venues speakers. If you have a mental picture by now you are seeing an out of the ordinary pretty unique set up. The bar was small and the music was loud and to be honest most people didn’t really understand or want to understand the performance. So I am watching my friend play his ass off and play this fucked up brutal music while these people that probably have never tried to create anything them selves talk shit and mock him. Now the majority of the people that were there were into the music but its life and you can’t help but focus on the bad sometimes.

So you ask why does he do this if people might not accept what he is doing? Because he is a believer. He believes that music is his sanctuary. His escape from the trails of life and no matter what the music sounds like to others, it sounds beautiful to him. This very reason is why I started playing music. It was my safe place away from insecurity and anxiety. It was either play my fucked up loud music that most people will not understand or death. My approach to fitness and the reason why I opened a gym and started a fitness company shares the same principals. When I felt that I have given everything that I have in a full time capacity to music I got into fitness. It was my other love.

Fitness is my love. It is my safe place. My escape from anxiety issues. The way that I can give back is to try to inspire people to use fitness as a sanctuary away from the trails of their lives. I feel the same way towards fitness as I do with music in relation to my life. It is either fitness or death and just like my music I don’t care if people understand that or not. I am a believer.

Just because….

Posted in Uncategorized on March 7, 2013 by riseabovefitnessoc

So I wanted to touch on a subject really quick and I promise not make it a long winded blabber. I’m over it how people and trainers think that just because their client is sweaty and exhausted that they got a great workout in. Think that you got to be dripping sweat to get lean? That is not the case. I recently heard someone say that they felt they got a great workout in but they didn’t sweat so they didn’t think it was enough. Let me say this. Just because you aren’t dripping with sweat does not mean that you did not do anything to better your body. You can jump up and down and wiggle like an idiot for an hour and sweat your balls (tits if you are a girl) off and yes burn calories but what is it doing to benefit your body outside of losing water weight and burning  aerobic calories? Nothing! Want to get ripped and burn fat and get lean. Then don’t be afraid of some iron in your life. Working your muscle fibers burns a ton more calories and FAT then bullshit 4th rate Insanity workouts. Eat the right foods. Lift weight. If you want to keep your cardio up then do some sprints. Its really that simple. Oh and sometimes you aren’t going to sweat that much and thats ok!

The memory will live on.

Today is indeed a sad day for me. When you have some success doing something that you love you never really think about writing a statement about that something coming to an end. Well that dream that we have had as Bleeding Through has come to an end.

I think I can speak for the rest of my bandmates in saying that we always hoped it would end on our terms and it has.

We have been fortunate to have a strong fan base worldwide and have brought joy to many and pissed off many more. BT was always a band that wore the emotion of the music on our sleeves. We cared about everyone like family that ever took the time to listen to our band, support our merchandise and go to our shows. S

ince 1999 we have been blessed to be able to tour the world, record seven records with some great musical minds, tour with amazing bands and people,  work with people with character such as management, booking agents and road crew.

Most importantly, we made lasting friends from this journey. We have been honored to be part of a expanding the musical movement of heavy music and hope to be remembered as a benchmark and pioneer of a specific style of music.

We have been a band since 1999 and many of us just had life catch up with us in the way of marriages, kids, businesses and other endeavors. We can no longer dedicate what we need to to keep BT going.

Personally I feel doing this band in a part time fashion is not what this band is about and and feel like we have always been an all or nothing band. With that being said and because we have established a world wide following over the last 14 years we want to give us and those people one more chance to share in this music together. We are setting up farewell tours. Dates will be up and promoted very soon.

To those who supported this band: It has been an honor.

what makes you sooooooo cooooooool?

Posted in Uncategorized on December 19, 2012 by riseabovefitnessoc

So this is my first blog in a while. Been super busy trying to have Rise Above Fitness run like a well oiled machine. Low and behold my gym RAF has been open for about a year and a half and everyday is an absolute dream come true. Just yesterday it was in the peak hour of the gym and I was looking around at all the different types of people that were training together and said to myself “this is why I opened the gym.” “This is worth the stress and anxiety.”

I said that because I was looking at a mid 50’s grandma, bearded biker, high school football player, massive power lifter, women just trying to look great in jeans and pro MMA fighters all working out together in the same place and really getting work down. A place that every type of person can come and not deal with egos or bullshit. Work gets down, programs followed and friendly shit talking takes place. No bragging, No competition, Just Hard work being done and people getting the return from it.

Now you didn’t think that this was going to just be a fluff piece did you? So let me get right to it. When did Fitness become something that people constantly brag about? I mean it is awesome to share yourself with people for inspirational purposes but lets get real here. People that used to make fun of me for constantly going and caring about the gym. People the gave me crap for leaving parties or dinners to go to the gym cause I had the itch to go are now some of the biggest bullshit artist out there when it comes to fitness. my favorite are people that post pictures or workouts that they themselves can’t even do. They tell you how gnarly they are on instagram and facebook but then you meet them and see them workout and its a fucking joke. They pose to get more followers which makes them……….FUCKING POSERS!!!!! Which leads me to my next topic of the method brag. Crossfit, Polyquin, Metabolic circuit training, olympic, blah blah blah blah. Now this is probably the wrong thing for a business owner and trainer to say but NOTHING is the right way or wrong way. Now you can disagree with methods and obviously bad form is bad form and should be corrected and even then different training has different form and practice but to say something is wrong is just ignorant! These are the newb’s. The people that got in to lifting cause it is all of a sudden cool and workout not for them selves but for the trend or click. All methods are beneficial so it bums me out to see so many people say something is wrong. Opinion is just that. An opinion. I feel if you dedicate yourself to a program then you will see the return and its up to you as to which program you should follow and what your body reacts to best. Even change it up once in a while. Don’t get to carried away with a time or a tempo. Now I can sit here and tell you my opinions are on alot of methods but that is for another time.

I’m a big pride person but there is a huge difference between pride and arrogance. I take pride in my programing and can take critics opinion well. If I couldn’t then that would be arrogance. I want to learn and grow and the way I can dod that to better my brand and my gym is to listen to critics. I just find more than ever there is to much “right and wrong” talk.

You are not cool if you do Crossfit. You are not cool if you are a  Kettle Bell Club member. you are not cool if you are a power lifter. You are not cool if you are a body builder. Fuck! you are not cool if you train with me or come to my gym. You are just a person that wants to better themselves physically and mentally. So be excited about your progress but lets not brag. Share with people but make sure what you are sharing is legit. Find a program that works and DO WORK!

My appreciation (in a nutshell)

Posted in Uncategorized on February 8, 2012 by riseabovefitnessoc

So this might sound very corny but I was watching the Voice last night with my wife and I found myself getting very choked up by all the performers stories and the sacrifices and battles they had to fight just to get a chance. I started thinking about my music career with Bleeding Through and even before that with 18 Visions and Throwdown. What I was thinking about was there were these people that would give anything for the chance to perform on a stage in front of people and get there music out and share their emotional output with people. It was something so basic and so pure. They just wanted to be heard. I have had the privilege to share music with people all of the world and see amazing things and places. If it were not for music then I would have never meet my wife which if I could take I thing away from it would be enough for me 10x over.

Watching that show really made me remember the sacrifice that I had to make to go for that dream and from day one to right now that dream was just to share with people and feel the release of all the things in my life that I was fighting. Insecurities, depression and worst of all social anxiety. Another thing I have learned from building the band from the ground up was to never give up or lose faith in myself and that has transcended into diving head first into another passion which is fitness. With out music I could have never gained the courage to start my own fitness company and open my own gym and share my ideals with people. Music helped sharper my focus to this new endeavor in my life. Most of all I wanted to write this for 2 reasons. To share with people my advice with people that even if you feel you are stuck in the mud it might just take two more steps to get yourself unstuck. Even if those two steps are the hardest steps you have to take it is worth the effort. Secondly I just wanted to thank all the people who have supported me as a person along with my bands and now my fitness company Rise Above Fitness. Most importantly my wife, my family and all the wonderful friends that I have made over the years. If you are taking the time to read this then you are one of these people in which I speak and I owe you my gratitude.

Now pick up a weight and do some damage

All together now

I want to talk about gym culture and the importance of it. A lot of people write to me saying things like “man I wish my gym played good music.” or “man I wish the workouts were that brutal at my gym.” Well if you are not satisfied with your gyms culture then fucking bail. Like Paul Rudd in Forgetting Sara Marshall said “when life hands you lemons say fuck the lemons and bail.”

Better yet why don’t you be the one to set the culture and tempo in your gym? Be the example. To many times a gyms culture is stale and with that people just go through the motions. Be the one to light the fire. If you don’t like things and feel you are paying to much for a bullshit product then change it up. Or maybe you are paying to little. Everyone like to save a buck these days but money sometimes makes you accountable. If you are paying 13 bucks a month for 24 hour fitness I can understand not feeling a sense of urgency. You would be surprised how much an appointment with give you a kick in the ass.

Bottom line life is to short and your health should be the most important thing to you and if your not happy stop complaining and change it up. Go to a new gym. Try different workouts. Get a personal trainer and stop complaining!
